VPN to Watch Out-of-Market NFL Games: What Works in 2026
Why a VPN doesn't officially unlock out-of-market NFL games, what Sunday Ticket, NFL+ and DAZN Game Pass actually cover, and where a VPN still helps.
A VPN is not an official way to watch out-of-market NFL games. In the US the official option is NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube or YouTube TV, which is built for exactly this. Outside the US and China the official option is NFL Game Pass on DAZN. What your VPN’s server says about your location doesn’t change which games you’re allowed to stream, and YouTube checks where you are before live Sunday Ticket games.
The rest of this guide covers which service shows which games, what they cost as of October 2026, and the few cases where a VPN still helps.
Why a VPN isn’t the answer for out-of-market games
NFL broadcast rights are sold by territory. Your local CBS or FOX affiliate has the rights to your home team’s Sunday afternoon game. Sunday Ticket has the rights to the out-of-market games. National windows like Sunday Night Football belong to their own networks. Each service only streams what its license covers for the place you’re in.
That’s why location is checked so strictly. YouTube’s help page for Sunday Ticket is titled “US only”. When you open a live or upcoming game that needs location verification, it asks you to verify your location using a mobile device. That check runs on your phone’s location, not just your IP address, which is why a VPN on your laptop or TV generally won’t get past it. Several streaming guides advise turning off any VPN or proxy during verification because these tools can interfere with playback.
Some VPN providers and review sites say a VPN lets you “unlock” NFL games. Notice their own wording. ExpressVPN, for example, warns that using a VPN to get around blackouts may violate copyright or the streaming service’s terms. We don’t recommend relying on that. Your stream can be blocked partway through a game, and you have little recourse if your account is restricted.
The official ways to watch out-of-market NFL games
In the US: NFL Sunday Ticket
Sunday Ticket is the only official way to watch out-of-market Sunday afternoon games live in the US. According to YouTube’s own list of what’s included, it carries regular-season Sunday afternoon games on CBS and FOX that aren’t shown in your local market.
It does not include:
- Your local team’s Sunday afternoon game (that stays on your local station)
- National games such as Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football
- Thursday Night Football, which streams on Prime Video
- Preseason, postseason, digital-exclusive and international games
YouTube points you to the YouTube TV base plan for nationally televised games like SNF on NBC and MNF on ESPN.
2026 pricing. These are the season prices 9to5Google reported in September 2026:
| Option | 2026 season price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| New subscriber promo | $240 | Only if you’ve never had Sunday Ticket on YouTube or YouTube TV. Charged on top of YouTube TV |
| Existing YouTube TV customers | $378 | Charged on top of the YouTube TV subscription |
| Standalone (YouTube Primetime Channels) | $480 | No YouTube TV needed |
| Student plan | $109 | Listed by YouTube. Some guides say $119, so check before buying |
Coverage doesn’t agree on the YouTube TV base plan’s monthly price, and some older articles still show last season’s prices. Treat the table as a snapshot from October 2026 and confirm the price at checkout.
In the US: NFL+ (not for out-of-market Sundays)
People often confuse NFL+ with Sunday Ticket. As of 2026, the base NFL+ plan costs $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year. NFL+ Premium costs $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Base NFL+ streams live local and primetime games on phones and tablets only, plus NFL Network and game audio. Premium adds NFL RedZone and full and condensed replays.
NFL+ does not stream out-of-market regular-season games live. It’s a good fit if you mostly want your local team on your phone, or replays after the fact. Premium’s RedZone also shows highlights and touchdowns from around the league on Sunday afternoons.
Outside the US: NFL Game Pass on DAZN
Outside the US, the league’s official streaming home is NFL Game Pass on DAZN. It’s sold in more than 200 markets worldwide, with China the notable exception, under what Front Office Sports reports is a 10-year international deal. Coverage includes live games through the season, the playoffs and the Super Bowl, plus NFL RedZone and NFL Network.
Prices and packaging vary by country. In Canada, for example, Game Pass is included with a regular DAZN subscription. In other countries it’s a separate purchase or an add-on. Check DAZN’s site for your country, since prices change by region and promotion.
Quick comparison
| Where you are | What you want | Official option |
|---|---|---|
| US | Every out-of-market Sunday afternoon game | NFL Sunday Ticket (YouTube / YouTube TV) |
| US | Your local team and primetime games on your phone | NFL+ |
| US | Live look-ins across the league on Sundays | NFL RedZone (NFL+ Premium or a TV add-on) |
| Outside US and China | Nearly every game, including RedZone | NFL Game Pass on DAZN |
When a VPN does make sense for NFL fans
A VPN has real uses here. Getting around territorial rights isn’t one of them.
- Public Wi-Fi on game day. Streaming from a stadium, airport or hotel network? A VPN encrypts your traffic so other people on that network can’t easily snoop on it. Turn it off if your streaming app complains.
- Protecting your logins. Fake “free NFL stream” sites are a common source of malware and phishing. Stick to the official apps above. A good VPN with tracker or malware blocking adds a layer of protection, but it can’t make an unofficial stream safe.
- Privacy from your ISP. A VPN hides which sites you visit from your internet provider. It doesn’t make you anonymous to the streaming service you’re signed in to.
Watching while you travel
Within the US. YouTube TV’s travel help page says the service works while you travel inside the US, but which programs you get depends on where you are. To keep your account in good standing, YouTube says frequent travelers should use the service in their home area at least once every three months. For a short trip, update your current playback area rather than changing your home area.
Outside the US. Sunday Ticket is labeled US-only. If you’re abroad, the official route is the local NFL rightsholder in that country, which in most markets is DAZN’s Game Pass. Using a VPN to make a US subscription look like it’s at home breaks the location rules that the US-only label and the mobile check exist to enforce. Expect it to be unreliable.
Step-by-step: setting up Sunday Ticket the official way
- Decide whether you want YouTube TV too. If you also want your local CBS/FOX games and national games like SNF and MNF, the YouTube TV route covers both. If you only want out-of-market Sundays, the standalone version through YouTube Primetime Channels is the simpler choice.
- Check whether you qualify for the new-subscriber price. It only applies if you’ve never subscribed to Sunday Ticket on YouTube or YouTube TV.
- Turn on location access on your phone for the YouTube or YouTube TV app. Device location and app location are separate permissions, so make sure both are allowed.
- Turn off any VPN or proxy before you verify. Then open a live game and follow the prompt to confirm your location from your mobile device.
- Watch on your TV, computer or phone once you’ve verified.
Prices, included games and location rules change from season to season. Everything here reflects what YouTube, DAZN and NFL+ published as of late October 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get banned from Sunday Ticket for using a VPN? +
YouTube says Sunday Ticket is US-only and checks your location from a mobile device before live games. Getting around that check breaks the service's location rules, so the realistic outcomes are a blocked stream or action against your account. Getting your money back is unlikely.
Does Sunday Ticket include my local team's games? +
No. Sunday Ticket covers out-of-market Sunday afternoon games on CBS and FOX. Your local team's game stays on your local station, and national games like Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football aren't part of the package.
I'm a US subscriber traveling abroad. How do I watch? +
YouTube's Sunday Ticket help page is titled 'US only', so don't count on your US subscription working overseas. If you're abroad, check whether NFL Game Pass on DAZN is sold in the country you're visiting. It's the NFL's official international option.
Can NFL+ show out-of-market games live? +
Not regular-season Sunday afternoon games. The base NFL+ plan streams your live local and primetime games on phones and tablets only. Out-of-market regular-season games are on Sunday Ticket in the US.
