VPN Kick Fortnite Fix (Free): Stop the 'Removed From Match' Error
Why Fortnite kicks you for IP, VPN, machine or cheating, and the free official fixes: disconnect the VPN or proxy, repair Easy Anti-Cheat, verify files, contact Epic.
The free fix for the Fortnite “VPN kick” is to fully disconnect any VPN or proxy before you launch the game, then repair Easy Anti-Cheat and verify your game files if the kick keeps happening. If you are kicked with no VPN running at all, the message is likely a false flag, and Epic Player Support is the official place to sort it out.
Below is what the error actually means, the official steps in the order worth trying them, and what to do if none of them work. Details are as of November 2026, and Epic changes its help pages and anti-cheat setup from time to time.
What the “VPN kick” message means
The kick usually shows up as some version of: “You were removed from the match due to your IP, VPN, Machine or Cheating.” Some players see a variant that also mentions lag, as in Followchain’s write-up. It often appears right after you load into a match or drop from the Battle Bus.
The important thing is that this is a broad, catch-all notice. It lumps together several very different causes:
- An active VPN or proxy. Epic’s support pages repeatedly name VPNs and proxies as a source of connection and login trouble.
- Anti-cheat problems. Players in Epic’s Fortnite forums report getting the message without any VPN. A widely shared (but unconfirmed) community theory is that the kick happens when Easy Anti-Cheat fails to start properly alongside the game.
- An actual restriction on your account, IP or machine. If Epic has restricted you, no local fix will change that.
Is using a VPN against the rules?
Sources don’t fully agree here. A 2017 report from The Outer Haven said Epic announced it was cutting off VPN access to Fortnite. Today’s official help articles take a softer line: they don’t describe VPN use as bannable, but they consistently tell you to disconnect it when you run into problems. I could not find a current Epic statement that spells out a VPN policy either way. In practice, for playing Fortnite, the safest assumption is that a VPN is something to switch off, not something to work around.
The free fixes, step by step
Work through these in order. Most people are sorted by step 1 or 2.
1. Fully disconnect your VPN
Epic’s article on disconnecting a VPN when you get a “VPN is active” message is blunt: turn the VPN off. On Windows it points to Microsoft’s instructions; for other devices it tells you to check with your VPN provider.
- Open your VPN app and disconnect. Then quit the app entirely, not just minimize it, because some apps reconnect automatically.
- On Windows, open Settings > Network & Internet > VPN and make sure no VPN connection shows as connected.
- If your VPN has an “auto-connect” or “always on” setting, or a kill switch that blocks traffic when it’s off, disable it while you play.
- Close Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher completely, then relaunch both.
Browser VPN extensions only affect the browser, but it’s worth checking for any other system-wide VPN or “network accelerator” tool you may have installed and forgotten about.
2. Turn off any proxy server
A proxy can cause the same problems as a VPN. Epic’s connection troubleshooting guide lists identifying and disabling proxy servers as its own step.
- On Windows, go to Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy.
- Under manual proxy setup, turn off Use a proxy server.
- Restart the Epic Games Launcher.
If you’re on a school or work network that forces a proxy, you may not be able to change this yourself. Playing on a different network, such as your home connection, is the realistic option there.
3. Restart your network gear and test another connection
Epic’s ESP errors guide starts with restarting your modem, router and computer, and also lists turning off any VPN or proxy. It also recommends a useful test: if the problem goes away on a different connection, such as a mobile hotspot, the issue is your network, and Epic suggests contacting your internet provider.
4. Repair Easy Anti-Cheat (PC)
If you get kicked with no VPN or proxy running, the anti-cheat is the next suspect. Epic’s guide for the Easy Anti-Cheat “not installed” error describes an official repair:
- Go to your Fortnite install folder, then FortniteGame > Binaries > Win64 > EasyAntiCheat.
- Right-click the EasyAntiCheat file and choose Create shortcut.
- Right-click the shortcut, open Properties, and add a space followed by
repairat the end of the Target field. - Click Apply, double-click the shortcut, and choose Allow changes when Windows asks.
- Relaunch Fortnite.
Epic also notes that background programs can interfere with Easy Anti-Cheat, so close overlays and system tweaking or customization tools before testing. Folder names and steps can change with game updates, so check the linked article if anything doesn’t match what you see.
5. Verify your game files
Damaged files can stop the anti-cheat from loading. Epic’s verify game files guide covers this:
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and go to your Library.
- Click the three dots on Fortnite and select Manage.
- Click Verify and let it finish, which can take a while.
- Relaunch the game.
If verifying doesn’t help, Epic’s guidance is to uninstall and reinstall Fortnite through the launcher.
6. Contact Epic Player Support
If you’ve done all of the above and still get kicked, especially with no VPN, contact Epic Player Support at epicgames.com/help. Only Epic can tell you whether your account, IP or machine is restricted, and only Epic can lift a mistaken restriction. Never give your password or login codes to anyone claiming they can “unban” you.
Quick comparison: which fix fits your situation
| Your situation | Most likely cause | Try first |
|---|---|---|
| VPN was running when kicked | VPN IP or connection | Steps 1 and 2 |
| No VPN, kicked on every match (PC) | Anti-cheat not starting or damaged files | Steps 4 and 5 |
| Kicked only on one network | Network, proxy or ISP issue | Steps 2 and 3 |
| Kicked on every network and device | Possible account or machine restriction | Step 6 |
What not to do
Plenty of videos and sites promise a “free fix” that involves switching to a different VPN server, a “gaming” VPN, or downloaded tools that change your hardware ID. Skip them. Hopping VPN servers is not an official fix, many of those pages are written by VPN companies selling a subscription, and tools that alter your hardware identifiers or tamper with anti-cheat can get an account banned for real. Stick to Epic’s own steps above; they cost nothing.
If you use a VPN for privacy the rest of the time, the simple habit is to disconnect it before opening Fortnite and reconnect when you’re done.

Frequently asked questions
Does Fortnite ban you just for using a VPN? +
Epic's help pages treat VPNs and proxies as a cause of connection and login problems and tell you to turn them off, but they do not describe a ban for VPN use alone. Using a VPN to get around an existing ban or to cheat is a different matter and can break Epic's rules.
I'm not using a VPN. Why does Fortnite still say I was removed for IP, VPN, machine or cheating? +
Players on Epic's own forums report getting this message with no VPN running, so it is a broad catch-all rather than proof you used one. A common theory is that the anti-cheat did not start correctly, so repairing Easy Anti-Cheat and verifying game files are the next things to try before contacting Epic support.
Do I need to pay for anything to fix the VPN kick? +
No. Every official fix here is free: turning off the VPN or proxy, repairing Easy Anti-Cheat, verifying files in the Epic Games Launcher, and contacting Epic Player Support. Buying a different VPN is not an official fix and may not help.
Can a VPN remove a Fortnite ban? +
This guide does not cover that, and you should not try it. If you think a ban or kick is a mistake, the official route is to contact Epic Games Player Support through epicgames.com/help.
