VPN 30-Day Free Trial: How Money-Back Guarantees Really Work
Most VPN 30-day free trials are really money-back guarantees. Learn which providers offer them, the exclusions that catch people out, and how to get a refund.
If you’re searching for a “VPN 30-day free trial”, here’s the short answer: the big paid VPNs don’t give you 30 free days. What they offer is a 30-day money-back guarantee. You pay for a plan, use it fully, and ask for a full refund within 30 days if you don’t want to keep it. The refund route works well, but only if you buy the right way and ask before the deadline.
Below we explain how these guarantees work, how the main providers’ terms compare as of November 2026, and how to try a VPN without being charged.
Free trial vs. money-back guarantee
Two different things get sold as a “free trial”:
- A real free trial is a short period, usually 3 to 7 days, where you aren’t charged at all. With the big names, it almost always runs through the Apple App Store or Google Play and needs a payment method on file. If you don’t cancel in time, it turns into a paid subscription.
- A money-back guarantee means you pay first and get your money back if you ask within the window. This is where the “30 days” comes from. Some providers call it a “risk-free trial”. ExpressVPN, for example, titles its page “Try ExpressVPN Risk-Free for 30 Days”.
Review sites such as Tom’s Guide also note that most “free trials” from top VPNs are really either short mobile trials or a refund window on a paid plan.
How the main providers compare (as of November 2026)
These terms come from each provider’s own pricing and support pages. They change often, especially around sales like Black Friday, so check the live page before you pay.
| Provider | Refund window | Short free trial | App-store purchases |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 30 days | Android via Google Play (length differs between NordVPN’s own pages) | Refund through Apple, Google or Amazon |
| ExpressVPN | 30 days, first-time customers who buy on the website | 3 days via the iOS and Android apps | Refund through Apple or Google, at their discretion |
| Surfshark | 30 days | 7 days on 12- and 24-month plans, payment details required | Store trials are billed by the store |
| Proton VPN | 30 days, full refund | No trial mentioned in the pages we checked | Cancel in the App Store, then request the refund from Apple |
| CyberGhost | 45 days on longer plans, 14 days on the monthly plan | Not confirmed in our sources | Not covered by CyberGhost’s guarantee |
A few details worth knowing:
NordVPN
NordVPN’s pricing page says refunds for subscriptions bought through the Apple App Store, Google Play or Amazon must be requested from those stores. Its help center treats the Android trial as separate from the 30-day guarantee. NordVPN’s pages disagree on the trial length: some say 7 days, while a current promotional page says first-time Android users get 3 days through Google Play. Go by what the Play Store listing shows you at checkout.
ExpressVPN
According to ExpressVPN’s trial page, the 30-day guarantee covers first-time customers who subscribe directly on the website and ask for a refund through 24/7 live chat. The 3-day mobile trial is billed through the App Store or Google Play. Those subscribers have to ask Apple or Google for a refund, and it’s granted at the store’s discretion. Some third-party sites say you can stack the 3-day trial and the 30-day guarantee. Since ExpressVPN itself sends app-store customers to the stores, we wouldn’t count on that.
Surfshark
Surfshark’s support page says new users can start a website trial on 12- and 24-month plans, paying with PayPal, Apple Pay or a credit card, on up to three devices. When the trial ends, you’re charged, and you can still ask for a full refund within 30 days. Surfshark’s FAQ calls this 37 days in total. You can cancel the trial by turning off auto-renewal in your account.
Proton VPN
Proton’s cancellation guide says that if you subscribed in the last 30 days, you may be able to ask for a refund under its guarantee. Card refunds take about 5 to 10 business days. Proton says it can’t currently refund bank-transfer or cash payments. That matters if you pay that way for privacy reasons.
CyberGhost
CyberGhost’s support article gives 14 days on monthly plans and 45 days on longer plans. App Store and Google Play subscriptions are excluded from the guarantee. So the longest window here only applies if you commit to a long plan and buy on the website.
How to use a 30-day guarantee without getting stuck
- Buy directly on the provider’s website. For most providers, the 30-day guarantee only fully applies to direct purchases. If you subscribe in an app, the refund is up to Apple or Google.
- Use a refundable payment method. Cards and PayPal are the safe choice. Proton, for example, can’t refund cash or bank transfers. If you want to pay in a more private way, check the refund rules for that method first.
- Write down the deadline. Count 30 days (or 14 or 45) from the purchase date, not from when you first connected. Set a reminder a few days before.
- Test what you actually need. Check speeds on your own connection, the streaming services you use, the devices you own, and whether the kill switch works. Do it in the first week, not on day 29.
- Request the refund, then cancel. Contact support (usually live chat) and say you’re asking for a refund under the money-back guarantee. Turning off auto-renewal doesn’t trigger a refund, and NordVPN’s blog says so specifically.
- Keep the confirmation. Save the chat transcript or email until the money is back in your account.
How to cancel an app-store trial in time
If you’d rather use a short mobile trial and pay nothing, cancel it through the store:
- iPhone or iPad: Open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose the VPN, and tap Cancel Subscription. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before a trial ends. If you’ve already been charged, you can ask for a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple says to expect an update within 24 to 48 hours, and approval isn’t guaranteed.
- Android: Cancel in the Play Store under Payments & subscriptions. Google says to cancel before the trial period expires to avoid being charged. Uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription, and you may lose access as soon as you cancel.
What to avoid
- “Cracked” or “premium unlocked” VPN downloads. These turn up in search results for every big VPN brand. A modified VPN app sees all your traffic, which is the opposite of what a VPN is for. Only install apps from the provider’s own site or the official app stores.
- Signing up again and again for new trials. Most guarantees are for first-time customers, and providers can refuse repeat refunds.
- Assuming “free VPN” means the same thing as a free trial. Free plans exist, but they come with their own limits. That’s a separate decision from the paid options above.
Our take
If you want a full month to judge a VPN, buy the shortest plan you’re willing to keep from the provider’s website, pay by card or PayPal, and test properly in the first week. If you’re not convinced, ask for the refund well before day 30. A mobile app trial is fine for a quick test, but it usually doesn’t give you the provider’s own 30-day protection.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a VPN with a true 30-day free trial and no payment? +
Among the major paid providers we checked, no. What they offer is a 30-day (or longer) money-back guarantee: you pay up front and ask for a full refund within the window. The genuinely free-to-start options are short app-store trials, which still require a payment method on file.
Does cancelling my VPN subscription get my money back automatically? +
No. Turning off auto-renewal only stops future charges. You have to request the refund separately, through the VPN's support team for website purchases or through Apple or Google for app-store purchases.
Can I get a 30-day refund if I subscribed through the App Store or Google Play? +
Usually not from the VPN provider. ExpressVPN, NordVPN, CyberGhost and Proton VPN all send app-store customers to Apple or Google for refunds, which are granted at the store's discretion and generally under stricter rules.
Can I combine a mobile free trial with the 30-day guarantee? +
Only in some cases, so check before relying on it. Surfshark says its website trial is followed by the 30-day refund window, but ExpressVPN says its 3-day app trial is billed through the app store, where its 30-day guarantee does not apply.
